With Father’s Day coming up on the 19^th of June 2022, it’s a great time to look back at the origins of this annual celebratory day. Commemorated on the third Sunday of June every year, the holiday was initially established with the aim to celebrate and honour all the special male role models in our lives. Today, it maintains its original objective and like Mother’s Day, has grown into a worldwide phenomenon.

The History Of Fathers’ Day

While Mothers’ Day began as a traditional Christian holiday in the United States, the premise underpinning Fathers’ Day is a lot more modern. The idea of a day to specifically celebrate fathers has only come about in the past century and was only officially recognised as a national holiday during the Nixon administration in 1972. Although the aim of Fathers’ Day is to celebrate our influential paternal role models, the holiday was actually created by two women who simply wanted to honour the men in their lives.

The first Father’s Day occurred in 1908 in a church in West Virginia, when a woman named Grace Golden Clayton proposed that the church prepare a special sermon dedicated to fathers, in honour of the 362 local men who were killed in a tragic mining accident. During this sermon, churchgoers distributed red and white flowers, representing both the living and the dead, in a celebration of the men who impacted their lives.

The following year, a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd made it her mission to establish a country-wide celebration to honour paternal role models. As a child raised by a single father, Dodd wanted a holiday like Mother’s Day, wherein she could honour her own father and celebrate everything he’d done for her. She was ultimately successful, and in 1910, Washington state celebrated its first official Father’s Day on the third Sunday of June.

Over the years, the concept spread to other states, and eventually gained popularity all over the world. And while Father’s Day has different dates globally, most countries choose to celebrate the event on the anniversary of its historical roots — the third Sunday of June.
