The origins of modern Mother's Day date to 19th century America, when a woman named Ann Reeves Jarvis started the "Mothers' Day Work Club" — a club that would teach local women essential child-rearing skills. She later went on to organise the "Mothers' Friendship Day", during which mothers would gather to facilitate reconciliation between former Confederate and Union soldiers in post-civil war America.

In later years, after the passing of her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis's daughter wanted to continue the legacy of her mother and commemorate her lifetime of hard work and sacrifice. In 1908, she held a Mother’s Day celebration in Philadelphia, in partnership with a local department store. Hundreds of people attended to celebrate the mother in their lives. The success of this event prompted her to start a campaign to make Mother's Day a recognised holiday in the United States. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a measure that officially made the second Sunday of every May "Mother's Day".

The idea of Mother's Day quickly spread around the world. From Dubai to Paris, London to Beijing, people all over the globe now celebrate the mothers in their lives on a special day dedicated just for them.
